With soft melodies and technical challenges, this Violin Concerto by Max Bruch is beloved, and it is performed tonight by Nikolaj Znaider. We also hear Elgar’s infinitely beautiful Enigma Variations with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra in all its splendour.
The Violin Concerto by Max Bruch is beloved for its soft melodies and technical challenges, which this evening’s soloist Nikolaj Znaider has completely mastered. We also hear Elgar’s infinitely beautiful Enigma Variations.
A beloved cornerstone of the violin repertoire is Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in G Minor. Overflowing with lyrical beauty and passionate intensity, it requires technical brilliance and emotional expressiveness from the soloist. Tonight’s star, Nikolaj Znaider, conducts and performs the solo – and masters this piece entirely.
After that, the music of Richard Strauss takes us on an adventure. This tone poem tells the story of the legendary jester Till Eulenspiegel, who plays assorted pranks on the people around him. Strauss’ vivid and quick orchestration brings him to life.
We conclude with Edward Elgar’s beloved Enigma Variations, a series of portraits of the composer’s friends and loved ones, variations on the same musical theme. The work ranges from playful charm to a more ceremonious and noble style, such as in the renowned Variation No. 9, Nimrod. The piece reveals Elgar’s deep ability to evoke character and emotion in his music.
With Nikolaj Znaider’s dazzling artistry at the podium, we have an unforgettable experience of humour, passion and emotional depth together with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra.
We hear Nikolaj Znaider in this concert thanks to the generous support of the Sten A. Olsson Foundation.
