Kullervo is one of Sibelius’s early masterpieces, a symphonic suite with a powerful quality that depicts the tragic fate of Kullervo. His family is killed and he is sold as a slave, but eventually he manages to make his way in the world. However, he does not realise that the woman he desires is his long-lost sister…

This magnificent suite for orchestra, male voice choir and two soloists paints harsh and violent scenes from the Kalevala, but it also has lighter moments when happiness seems within reach. Sibelius was 26 years old when Kullervo premièred on the 28 April, 1892, and he saw a bright future ahead of him – six weeks later, he married Aino Järnelt and went on honeymoon to Karelia.

Santtu-Matias Rouvali is new Chief Conductor at the Gothenburg Symphony.
