A carnival is in town and you’re invited! Principal Guest Conductor Barbara Hannigan opens the season with musical fireworks ranging from Berlioz to Barbara Streisand. We promise that you will want to stay late at the party!

Say yes to life and to the party, and allow yourself to embrace the music, carousels and colourful bunting together with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. At this year’s season opening, the incomparable Barbara Hannigan guides us through the Roman Carnival Overture by Hector Berlioz. The music comes from the carnival scene of his rarely performed opera about the Florentine Benvenuto Cellini. The overture is much more popular.

In a whirlwind, we move on to the musical Carousel, composed by Richard Rogers and named the 20th century’s biggest musical by Time Magazine. The incredibly beautiful waltz in the introduction spans the entire emotional spectrum.

We linger at the fairgrounds and the attractions begin to slow; we sense the first signs of the return of daily life. “I want the music to play forever,” the young woman wishes in the song I Stayed Too Long at the Fair. It was a hit when Barbra Streisand sang it in 1963 and now we hear it performed by Hannigan.

Barbara Hannigan is Principal Guest Conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra since 2019. With an unsurpassed dramatic sensibility, she is among the absolute leaders of artistic innovation. Her concerts are intended as exciting, holistic experiences in which the end result is greater than the sum of its parts.
