It is a story focused on the life of a child growing up, a child that turns out to be the composer Frédéric Chopin. The story is brought forward through hundreds of short texts, in which several different voices tell the story using a mixture of prose and lyric poetry. In Martin Skafte’s downsized version of the novel, all references to specific people and places have been removed. What remains is a story in seventeen songs about an undefined child growing up in an undefined time and place; an empty canvas upon which a listener can project one’s own thoughts and feelings. References to Chopin can instead be found within the music. Most obviously, a very early polonaise by Chopin appears and returns in different ways throughout the cycle. Do not however expect Skafte’s music to sound like Chopin’s. Apart from the piano being a common denominator, there is not that much likeness to be found. Instead we here have two different musical voices set in motion; a motion sometimes resulting in them meeting, much like in Skafte’s earlier suite for piano 24 Preludes – Inspired by the Preludes of Claude Debussy.
Soprano – Nina Ewald
Piano – Anna Brolin
Composer – Martin Skafte
