Event has already taken place. Schubert's amazing song collection Winterreise with Peter Mattei baritone and Lars David Nilsson piano.
What would a winter be without a winter journey?
Finally, Peter Mattei is back in Gothenburg Concert Hall with the skinless songs that he has made his own. We say yes, thank you. One cannot get enough of Schubert’s song collection Winterreise.
The 24 songs reflect all stages of life from love happiness and betrayal to dreams and the final journey towards darkness and cold.
Schubert surpassed himself in the Winterreise, which is one of the most important contributions to the art of singing. There is an incomparable range of emotions here, and Peter Mattei, with his operatic experience and character, is the man to reflect all shades and moods in this rich piece.
Two weeks after Schubert made the final adjustments to the songs, he died in a narrow wooden bed at his brother’s house on a cold autumn day on November 19, 1828.(And Mattei? He sold out Gothenburg’s Concert Hall in 2018 and had to give an extra concert at Klubb T20)
“The rich beauty of Mattei’s baritone was audible right from the start (…) Mattei is the rare singer who has both a rich, burning chest voice and a vibrant top, and is able to achieve a full range of dynamic expression and color on every note in between.” New York Classical review
