Sampled sounds, acoustic and electric instruments. A fizzing mix of hip hop, rock, pop, house, jazz and ambient. Norwegian trumpet player Nils Petter Molvær always reaches for the next, novel experience.

With a sound rooted in Miles Davis and Jon Hassel, he treats the trumpet as more than just an instrument: for Molvær, it is a paintbrush and joystick that conceives ever-changing tonal worlds and soundscapes. Listen to miles of icy tundra and sweltering deserts, lonely figures and cities sounding the alarm, gently lapping waves and howling winds.

Molvær’s playing vaguely reminds us of Arild Andersen, Terje Rypdal and Jan Garbarek – the greats of Norwegian 1970s’ jazz, who invited the force of nature to penetrate and colour their notes. Above all, however, Nils Petter Molvær is himself: a single-minded visionary on a never-ending journey of discovery.
