Irresistible Mozart gems, including the C major Piano Concerto, K 467, well-known from the Bo Widerberg movie Elvira Madigan, with Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra led by Leif Ove Andsnes from the piano.

The spring of 1785 was hectic for Mozart in Vienna. He welcomed a string of students in the spacious but often untidy flat at Domgasse 5 in central Vienna. Further to that, he arranged his own subscription series of concerts including new piano concertos.

At the first of these he played the dramatically dark No 20 in D Minor. Immediately after that he immersed himself into the work of the next concert, which would make a sharp contrast to the previous one. No 21 in C Major is sublimely balanced, majestic and warm. Piano and orchestra melt together elegantly, but it is also one of his most virtuosic concerts. After the theme of the slow movement was used by Bo Widerberg in his 1967 movie, the piano concerto is often called “Elvira Madigan”.

Soloist, leading the orchestra from the piano: Leif Ove Andsnes
