Event has already taken place. Colors flow when Ryan Bancroft leads visiting Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and pianist Seong-Jin Cho.
Since winning the famous Chopin Competition in 2015, South Korean pianist Seong-Jin Cho is one of the world’s most sought-after soloists. At this concert we hear him in Camille Saint-Saën’s colorful 5th Piano Concerto. It was composed in Luxor and because of the influences from there it is often called ‘the Egyptian’. Saint-Saëns himself said that it represented a sea voyage.
We also get to hear Rachmaninov’s very last work, the symphonic dances in which the long-established American composer dreams of returning to Russia. Plus the American Pulitzer and Grammy Award winner Caroline Shaw’s dreamily imaginative Entr’acte, music inspired by Joseph Haydn.
The award-winning conductor Ryan Bancroft, also from the USA, leads the visiting Swedish Royal Philharmonic. As of this season, Bancroft is the orchestra’s chief conductor.
