Edward Elgar’s cello concerto is both gripping and beautiful, virtuosic and flamboyant. The young German cellist Leonard Elschenbroich takes care of the solo part.
In contrast to Elgar’s cello concerto, we hear William Walton’s first symphony, an emotional volcanic eruption, a musical lava flow of suffering. The music is about the stormy relationship with the baroness Imma von Doernberg who left him for the Hungarian doctor, musician and art philosopher Tibor Csató.
Aggression pulsates sometimes under the surface, and the undiluted jealousy soon becomes uncontrollable. Leading the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra is the British conductor John Wilson.
