Event has already taken place. Music filled with longing with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra; Tabita Berglund, conductor; and Håkan Hardenberger, trumpet.
At night, nature is filled with new life in Helen Grime’s atmospheric trumpet concerto, performed by Håkan Hardenberger. In celebrated composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir’s mighty Metacosmos, we hear beauty born from chaos. Tabita Berglund conducts.
Beginning and ending the concerto, we hear music on the theme of longing – which no one has depicted better than Wagner, in his prelude to the opera Tristan und Isolde. Tension builds for longer than seems possible, until finally erupting into jubilation. Jean Sibelius borrowed both style and sounds from Wagner for his seventh symphony. There were many twists and turns before Sibelius’ most original work was ready for performance. The symphony has only one movement, but took a decade to write.
Anna Thorvaldsdottir’s exciting Metacosmos shares the same ominous sound, circling the listener like a killer whale, ready to pierce the surface. Through masterful orchestration, she unites nature’s different elements into a structured whole.
Norwegian star Tabita Berglund has had a magnificent career among Europe’s most prominent orchestras. In 2024 she takes over as principal guest conductor for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. We are proud to welcome her to the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra.
