Two beautiful pieces from the great romantic, with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra; Andrés Orozco-Estrada, conductor; and Kirill Gerstein, piano.
The second concert in our Brahms week, where we select the most beautiful pieces from romantic Johannes Brahms. This afternoon’s programme features the masterful Piano Concerto No. 2, with soloist Kirill Gerstein. In conclusion, we hear Symphony No. 2.
When naming the world’s most beloved piano concertos, Brahms’ second piano concerto often tops the list. Ironically, he referred to it as “a little piece” – a performance takes around 50 minutes. This evening’s pianist, American Kirill Gerstein, broke through as a Brahms soloist in the early 2000s and is praised for his exquisite technique.
After intermission, we are enveloped by Symphony No. 2, a work immediately loved by audiences after its premiere in Vienna in 1877. The music is filled with contrasts between light and dark, sense and feeling. Simply sit back and let the sounds carry you. Conductor is Andrés Orozco-Estrada.
The Brahms week starts of on Wednesday January 22 when Gothenburg Symphony plays symphony no 1.
