————————————-

Without exaggerating, Herbert Blomstedt is Sweden’s most internationally acclaimed and well-known conductor of all time.

Here he leads the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra in Franz Schubert’s Ninth Symphony in C major, which offers both thoughtful melancholy and joy for the future. It was the last symphony Schubert composed. He rather comically quotes the last movement of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, which had been first performed the year before, in 1824, which also became his last. We also hear two modern Swedish classics, Ingvar Lidholm’s Toccata e canto and Ritornell.
