Event has already taken place. Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, Elim Chan conductor, Bertrand Chamayou piano
Award-winning French pianist Bertrand Chamayou takes on Saint-Saëns’ elegant, virtuose and original second piano concerto with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. The conductor is the internationally renowned Elim Chan, former head of Norrlandsoperan’s orchestra and new chief conductor in Antwerp.
In addition, Béla Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, composed in 1943 in the US, to where Bartók fled from the Nazis who were ravaging Europe. He had also started to feel the symptoms of what would later be diagnosed as leukaemia. Perhaps he felt that time was running out, as this music is like a summary of his entire musical catalogue.
His love for folk music and a notably dance-friendly rhythmical drive are present. It’s also very beautiful: dense orchestral sounds burst into dulcet sceneries with elements of the Hungarian countryside.
