Choose between this evening’s concert where Sibelius’ Finlandia and Symphony No 2 is on the programme or 1 February with Tarrodi’s Liguria and Stravinsky’s Petrushka. Both concerts, you will meet the our chief conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali who will guide you through the music.
The evening begins with an exclusive introduction to the coming season and after the concert, we meet together in Götaplatsfoajén where the bar is open and more musical surprises await. If there is one piece of music associated with Finland it is certainly Sibelius’ Finlandia. It was premièred in 1899 and has ever since been a symbol of Finnish independence and national identity. And the tunes! Finlandia reflects an elemental force and joy of freedom that we all can share.
The second symphony was premiered by the Helsinki Philharmonic Society on 8 March 1902, with the composer conducting. After three sold-out performances, Sibelius him self wrote, “My second symphony is a confession of the soul.
Wilhelm Stenhammar, Chief Conductor from 1907 to 1922 was very fond of Sibeliu´s work and developed the orchestra´s fine tradition of playing Stenhammar. Since the first performance Sibelius Symphony No 2 has been played 151 times by the Gothenburg Symphony!
