Richard Strauss was undeniably sly as a fox; he teased, surprised and fascinated, always with the same good humour. It’s evident in this lovely musical pastiche of 18th century dramatist Molière’s comedy The Merchant Gentleman.

But the signs can be glimpsed as early as in piano concerto Burlesque, which, with its humour, daring, and thrilling virtuosity is one of the hidden gems of the romantic era. Russian Yury Favorin is acutely aware of this, and has gained recognition for his performances of this concerto.

Bartók’s Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta took a new, evolutionary step, and was, with its concentration and vitality, refreshing news on the world music market.
