We should be thankful to the French salons whose status-aware, prominent and attention-seeking hosts gifted music with many chamber music classics.

You had to be first with the latest! Gabriel Fauré wrote a vast number of beautiful pieces for high society, just like his student Ravel, even if the posthumous Violin Sonata, an unpublished work from his youth, 1897, never saw the luxurious salons of its day. Germaine Tailleferre picked up the baton from her mentor Ravel, and the late Piano Trio is among her best works.

Pianist Shostakovich also found the format tempting, though his piano trio was written in the shadow of war in 1944, as a celebration and obituary of his highly regarded friend Ivan Sollertinsky.
