Event has already taken place. Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, Santtu-Matias Rouvali conductor, Katy Woolley horn (previously annonunced Sol Gabetta has canceled her participation in the concert)
Previously announced soloist Sol Gabetta has canceled her participation in the concert due to illness. Instead, we meet hornist Katy Woolley who takes place on stage in R Strauss’ first horn concerto together with Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and chief conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali.
Brittish Woolley was appointed principal horn of the Philharmonia Orchestra in London at age twenty-two, having previously been awarded the third horn position while she was still a student. She has also performed as a soloist with the London Mozart Players and the New York Philharmonic. In 2019, Katy Woolley was appointed principal horn of the Concertgebouworkest in Amsterdam. She is also a passionate teacher and has been a professor of horn at both the Royal Academy of Music and Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London.
Unsuk Chin is one of the most exciting composers of our time, here represented by her contribution to Beethoven’s 250th anniversary, Subito con forza (“Immediately, with power”), where the music restlessly throws itself from one idea to another.
Something more self-absorbed, emotional and honest than Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony is hard to find. Musical ideas are soon overcome with feelings. A gripping clarinet solo turns into an opera grotesque, the famous horn solo in the second movement culminates in a rampant emotional surge and the finale’s controlled fanfare swells to enormous proportions and twists during a protracted death struggle. Who can resist this?
