Little did Bach know, when he wrote and put together the music for the Christmas celebrations in Leipzig, 1734, that his music would live on for hundreds of years.

But many a Christmas since then, people have been captivated by the Christmas Oratorio’s heartfelt and jubilant music for orchestra, choir and vocal soloists. Parts 1-3 portray the birth of Jesus, and the events of the days thereafter.

Everything is held together by Laurence Equilbey, the Frenchwoman who has gained great respect as a choral conductor – she studied under Eric Ericsson – and who is also the principal conductor of the Insula Orchestra and the Accentus Choir that specialises in historically informed performances.
