I am really looking forward to play Stenhammar’s first symphony. It’s fun to play, and there is a lot for the horn section to do with many solo passages. It has long, beautiful lines and is almost like film music.
Stenhammar has such a fine musical language; pieces like the symphonies and the serenade never tire me. There is so much great music, and I think we should play it.
When you listen to beautiful music, things happen in your brain. It’s like meditation. It’s healing, as seen on MRI scans. So there is evidence! Thus, music has a direct impact on the body, whether you like Strauss or George Michael.
Even dissonances can be beautiful; they have a different energy. When they resolve into harmony, you feel something positive. Just like in a conversation – you work through the difficult parts until you understand each other.
Certain intervals and tensions also have a special effect on us. Popular music composers are good at using them. For example, in the intro to the series The Crown, there is a horn playing very few notes, but very powerful ones. It’s incredibly good.
