Singing, playing people create such beautiful tones from their throats and with their instruments that the angels listen in their heaven. The five glass reliefs (engravings) from 1935 were created at Orrefors glassworks by Simon Gate (1883-1945) and the engraver Bertil Gustafsson.
Simon Gate (1883-1945)
Designer, sculptor, visual artist. Education: Technical School, Stockholm, Stockholm Academy of the Arts, Stockholm. G. worked as a portrait painter and illustrator before he started at Orrefors glassworks in 1916 as its artistic director. Together with Edward Hald, Gate became one of the innovators of modern Swedish glass art. He became famous for his well-composed glass engravings with ornaments and naked figures. At the World’s Fair in Paris in 1925, his and Hald’s works received much attention and gave them their international breakthrough.
