Joseph Haydn is one of my favorite composers. He can be so light and so dramatic at the same time. And he is the father of string quartets. You can hear characters in the music, just like in opera. It is typical of the classical period, so I am really looking forward to playing his Symphony No. 103 this season.
The Viennese classicism, to which Haydn and Mozart belong, is perceived as so beautiful because the music is distinct. You immediately understand when it shows happiness, sadness… It is easy to visualize. The music is alive and you can “feel” as a listener where the harmonies are heading. But it’s not easy to play. For violinists, it’s very virtuosic. To reveal the beauty, I envision a dialogue. I think about what I want to convey and how I should build up the music towards a climax.
Really good music affects the listener, makes them think, shiver, or feel strongly. To get there, you need to load the music with information. It can take many years of training as a musician before you discover how to communicate effectively.
